Obesity

WHO defines Obesity as the following : Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.

Obesity is a complex disease, which results from weight gain and is secondary to the positive energy storage. Obesity is induced by environment nutrition, shortened sleep, drug, virus , gene , and endocrine disorder. It often increases the risk of hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and hypertension. Study shows that obesity-related hypertension is often complicated to cardiovascular (CV) autonomic dysfunction.

In TCM, the obesity is often regarded as phlegm-dampness. The phlegm-dampness pattern occurs due to more lipid assumption, alcohol, and being exposed to the rain for a long time. It often leads to qi stagnation and blood stasis; it has the characteristics of thick fur and obesity.
